Each of us creates our own brand. Your brand is how people perceive you. Your brand is a representation of your identity. If someone was asked to describe you, what would they say? Would it match how you describe yourself? I often look at life from a marketing perspective. Especially now in the time of social media overload, there are so many people trying to create their own brand and become an influencer. I’m assuming most of you have no interest in that, but your social media presence is still telling others about you. Take a minute to see what you are posting, sharing, or retweeting.
Are you sharing your good? Are you creating drama? Are you throwing yourself a pity party? Are you trying to educate others? Are you making people laugh or think or could you even be misguiding people? Social media can be an incredible tool for good and for negativity. It’s important for us all to do a social media audit from time to time. Review what you are posting. Check your sources before sharing. Review who you are following and eliminate anyone that is not bringing positivity into your life. Social media can be used as a call for help when you need support, but if you are posting over and over and over about how awful your life is and you are not getting the help you need, then you need to look beyond social media. If you have a talent, share it! There is a massive desire to consume content right now while we are all in our homes. Share music, a funny story, a favorite recipe, or heck even a drinking game if you’re into that. There is enough negativity in the world, especially now, and the public is craving good news to balance that out. It’s not healthy for us to only be consuming negative news all day.
I became conscious of building my brand a few years ago. I focused on what I wanted to share with the world and how I wanted to be remembered. I decided that sharing my love of animals, travel, positivity, and fitness would be my “brand.” If it doesn’t fit into one of those categories, I’m not likely sharing it. Yeah, I have bad days and worry about things, but I don’t choose to define myself by those. I do write about them in my blog because I strive to be authentic, even though I truly am able to stay happy and focused on the good a majority of the time. As you think about people you follow on social media, I bet you can come up with a quick summary of who they are online. Do you know some drama queens that are always posting some shocking stories or complaining about how everything is going wrong? How about a meme master that always has the funniest things to share even if they might be NSFW? There are the family album people that only share photos and stories of their kids. There are news junkies that obsess over sharing the latest political story, even if it isn’t true! Who are you to your followers? Is your brand true to who you are?
Is it time to redefine yourself? Is there more you want to share? What effect would you like to have when sharing with people? Gimme all your good stuff!! I’m here ready to hear your happy stories and see your best family moments. Let’s laugh when things are funny, celebrate our wins, and be there for others from time to time when they really need us. We all need more good, so keep sharing it, because good news is good business for your personal brand.
