Work, Play, Rest

Writer: Colleen AltschulColleen Altschul

Work hard, play hard, rest hard? I’ll be the first to admit that I have a hard time resting. My work is go, go, and go some more. My free time is filled with adventure and animal cuddling. I’m terrible at just sitting still or taking a day off. I push myself to be constantly moving or doing something. While others can enjoy a lazy day just watching Netflix, I’m itching to jump off the couch and do some laundry or something.

The constant presence of a cell phone and any number of social media sites, apps, and games ensures that even a brief moment in the bathroom or sitting down can be filled with distraction. I committed to making time every day this year to meditate, and I’ve been pretty good at it, but only because I made it another accomplishment to achieve each day. I found myself on a recent trip to our house on the beach feeling like I couldn’t just stop and relax even on a long holiday break.

Rest is incredibly important, especially if your life is full of commitments and responsibilities. Do you find it hard to just rest and relax? Can you disconnect and spend time just day dreaming? Those periods of rest allow us to download all the benefits of our hard work. Just like savasana (corpse pose) at the end of a yoga session, these periods of rest in life allow us to pause and absorb the benefits of all the actions we have recently taken. These moments of rest let us reconnect with our internal GPS system to see where we are going and decide if we need to recalculate our route. When I skip resting, I become inflexible and unable to see what’s going on around me, so any unexpected change comes in and spins me into chaos.

We all have different needs for rest, and the amount we need will fluctuate depending on your life circumstances. Are you resting enough to feel balanced? Are you taking time to enjoy the benefits of your hard work? Can you find time today to rest and review where your life is headed? Do you need some time to rest and heal before moving forward again? Make it a priority to rest just as hard as you work and play to stay in balance.
